From the mid to late 1800’s the area was known as the Mount Diablo Coalfield, the largest coal field in California. Hope, and Cumberland, there are over 200 miles of mine workings in the field) worked the field until the early 1900’s when higher quality coal was imported at a cheaper price. The preserve has over 60 miles of trails offering views of Mount Diablo and the San Joaquin River Delta, on clear days it’s possible to see the Sierra Nevada Mountain Range.
